Amal Labs selected for Global Chat for Learning & AI Accelerator to expand AI teacher support in Sub-Saharan Africa

Amal Labs has been selected as one of four global education innovators participating in the Chat for Learning & AI Accelerator, a six-month programme led by Turn.io in partnership with the Gates Foundation. The accelerator aims to strengthen and scale proven education solutions using AI-powered chat delivered through WhatsApp across Africa and India.

Across these regions, millions of children continue to fall behind in foundational skills such as reading and numeracy. Overcrowded classrooms, limited teaching resources, and uneven access to high-quality learning materials often leave teachers without the tools or training needed to effectively support every student.

The Chat for Learning & AI Accelerator focuses on scaling what already works. Rather than creating entirely new education technologies, the programme supports organisations with proven solutions to enhance their impact through stronger pedagogy, frontier AI integration, and rigorous measurement of learning outcomes.

Amal Labs was selected for its growing reach and its commitment to building responsible, locally grounded education technology designed to support teachers at scale. It develops AI-enabled learning tools that transform how classrooms teach and learn. By focusing on practical solutions for low-connectivity environments, the organisation equips teachers with interactive platforms that make personalised learning possible in everyday classroom settings.

“Being selected for this accelerator is an exciting opportunity to bring AI-powered learning support directly to teachers through WhatsApp and mobile,” said Dr. Omar El Sayed, Head of AI and Machine Learning at Amal Labs. “By combining advanced AI with tools teachers already use every day, we can help educators easily create high-quality, locally relevant learning materials and support more personalised learning in their classrooms.”

Over the course of six months, participating organisations will move through multiple cycles of design, testing, and refinement. They will receive hands-on technical support and access to advanced AI capabilities that enable personalised feedback, learning assessment, and teacher coaching in local languages.
